Mental Health & Creativity

Those who enjoy creating are usually those who feel deeply, and feel all sorts of intensity of emotions. It is how you can craft what you do, how you evoke some sort of emotion. How some people find a way to connect, by sharing the relationship you have with what they love to do.

But what I want to point out, is how this feeling deeply is often diagnosed as a mental health concern. Depression is commonly diagnosed, quite a few people have been on anti depressants at some point in their lives.

Same with anti-anxiety medication to help calm your nervous system, which needs calming with the pace people are expected to move at – high pressure jobs to get a solid income, lots of expectations, always progressing in your career, and expecting more & more of yourself.

It’s no wonder it’s become more common for burn out, or changing career paths or to take on few casual jobs, keeping your quality of life & balance in your lives.

Creativity is this whole new realm, where intensity of emotions can be more than ‘usual’ – and it can impact on your day to day activities as you get caught up in creating.

The ‘masks we wear’- can be about putting on a face, escaping what we really feel, or, it can be about expressing & feeling free & safe to share it. Two completely different views.

I started questioning myself when I started expressing in different ways. Instead of enjoying writing, music, movements, dancing, art like I used to… I suppressed it. And said to myself stop trying to be ‘special’, stop trying to draw attention to yourself, just be normal..

Then I got confused with what mask I was really wearing, my own? Or was it to keep everything in line & making sense (like our brains love to do).

Linking creating to a mental illness, when it is just expression of your soul. A healthy way to express, instead of suppressing so much that it becomes dis-ease in the body, leading to physical or mental illness. Finding healthy ways of expressing is so important for this.

So my rant is over. Be careful / aware of what you associate your creations or expressions with. And hold them lightly so they can blossom. Everyone will have all sorts of opinions of what you create or express. And there will be judgment because its our human nature, we love to categorise & make sense of things.

But when you create, it doesn’t have to make sense, it is a connection with your senses, it is a way we can feel more alive, tune into a space to create…. And EXPRESS.

The masks we wear – may not be about hiding or escaping ourselves, they may be about expressing all different parts in us, by letting ourselves feel free enough to do so.

We are human, we feel things..

To feel is to live
To live is to love
And to love is to remember
Why we want to feel

Photo below is part of an animation projected through the trees in Japan. People in the park got to become part of the story & be a ‘joy flower’ leading the young girl home. It was so cool!
